The combination of the cocker and the poodle resulting in the
cockapoo is one of the most well known and loved designer
breeds.  The cockapoo has a large following, and several
registries dedicated to them.  For more information about

The Poodle, though often equated to the beauty with no brains, is
exceptionally smart, and excels in obedience training.  This may be why
the Poodle is one of the most popular breeds according to AKC
registration statistics.  Poodles can be a variety of colors.  The toy poodle
matures to 4 – 10 lbs.  The mini size matures to 10 – 15 lbs.  Standard
size is even larger.  The breed originated in Germany as a water retriever.
The stylish "Poodle clip" was designed by hunters to help the dogs move
through the water more efficiently. The patches of hair left on the body
are meant to protect vital organs and joints which are susceptible to cold.
The Standard variety is the oldest of the three varieties. The Miniature
variety may have been used for truffle hunting. The Toy Poodle was often
used in performances and circuses.  The Poodle can accommodate
nearly any size living quarters. His hypoallergenic coat may reduce
allergic reactions, but requires regular professional grooming. The Poodle
is an active breed and requires daily exercise.

Exhibited in the US since the
1880s, the Cocker Spaniel
remains one of the most
popular breeds.  The Cocker
has a sturdy, compact body of
about 25 lbs. and a silky, flat
or wavy coat. He is a merry,
well-balanced dog that is
capable of considerable
speed and great endurance.
Cockers are intelligent, gentle
dogs that thrive as part of a
family.  They are merry little
dogs, and can be both couch
potato and fun playmate.

Information about Cockapoos -

Size. Size is determined by the height, rather than the weight, of the adult dog. Height is measured to the top of the shoulder in
standing position.
Toy:        10” or less at shoulder height – under 12 pounds
Mini:        11” – 14” at shoulder - usually 12-20 pounds
Standard:        15” or higher – over 20 pounds

COLOR AND MARKINGS:

Colors        black, chocolate, red, buff, cream, apricot; any of these colors with
          white markings

Parti        two or more solid colors, one of which must be white
Phantom        usually a black body with brown color on legs, under tail, eyebrows, side of face
Sable        black or dark brown at birth, lightening to a mix of gold, silver, red, brown, or tan; with black tips usually clearing to black
only on the tail and ears and sometimes on the muzzle and back.
Tri-color        parti color with tan markings over eyes, on muzzle, ears, legs and sometimes chest
Merle        lighter colors of the base color swirled with the darker base color (this color effect is obvious at birth.)
Roan   (rare)    Black spots dappled into the white areas of a parti colored dog (this color effect will begin to show up at about 4
wks.  If it has not shown up on the puppy by then, and the puppy developes spots in the white area later, it is not roan, but ticked)

Personality. Cockapoos are highly trainable, with a keen intelligence. They are curious and eager to perform. They do well with one-
person owners as well as with families with young children. They are very people-oriented, outgoing and happy dogs.

Hair. Coat is usually dense; may be wavy or curly; usually little-to-no-shedding.

Tails. Tails may be docked or not. (We do not always dock the tails of our puppies.)

Lifespan. Generally 14 to 18 years, even into the 20’s.

Activity Level. They adapt well to apartments and homes, but are also “at home” on the largest farm. They have a moderate activity
level. Cockapoos are not meant to be outside dogs.  They are happiest when they are with people.
Cockapoo information
Generational breeding of the cockapoo:

The cockapoo is a mix of poodle and cocker spaniel.  There are no other breeds that should be introduced into the mix if the desired goal is a true
cockapoo.  Cockapoos are usually 50% toy or mini poodle and 50% american cocker spaniel.  Some breeders may use a standard size poodle in
the mix to produce a larger size cockapoo, and sometimes breeders will use english cocker spaniels which produce a more lanky cockapoo.

First generation cockapoos are the results of a cocker and poodle breeding, and they are also known as F1 cockapoos.  They are not genetically
different than further generations of cockapoos.  (However the quality of dogs used in the mix can make a big difference in the results.)   Second
generation cockapoos also known as F2 cockapoos are the result of two F1 cockapoos being bred.  Further generations are decided by the
lowest number.  For example, if a F2 cockapoo is bred to a F3 cockapoo, the puppies will be F3 cockapoos, not F4 because the count continues
from the lowest generational number.  This is interesting and useful to the breeder, but doesn't amount to a hill of beans for the person who wants
to adopt a cockapoo puppy for a pet.

Sometimes a cockapoo is bred back to a pure bred poodle.  The resulting puppies are F1B cockapoos.  This breeding can produce a cockapoo
with more of a poodle coat, but not always.  There are some lines of cockapoos that benefit from this type of breeding, and some that do not.  The
breeder must know the lines and do their own research.

There is a lot of information about the poodle mixes available, but not all poodle mixes are created equally.  Even
within the poodle breed there is extreem variation not only in size, but also in temperament and coat.  A show
poodle may be thin boned, high strung, dainty and have a very curly wool coat.  However, pet quality poodles can
be heavy boned, athletic, stocky and have more of a fleece coat.  Both types are usually very smart, and always
have non shedding coats.

When a poodle is mixed with another breed of dog, the resulting pups can have genetics that are all over the board
so to speak.  It takes a breeder that has done their homework to produce puppies that are highly desirable,
otherwise it can be just a crapshoot.  It pays to find a breeder that is starting out with excellent breeding specimens
when you are looking for a puppy, or you may not actually get what you were wanting!

Cocker spaniels are a low shedding breed that complements the poodle breed very well.  Cockapoos, even in the
first generation, can be totally non shedding and very desirable in looks, intellegence, and health.  This is not
always the case with some other mixes such as labradoodles, goldendoodles, chipoos and ect.  With the
labradoodle for example,  it takes multi generational breeding to produce desirable results.

Cockapoo coats~

Most cockapoos are non shed to low shed.  As compared to other poodle mixes, true cockapoos are not heavy shedders since neither of the
parent breeds are heavy sheders. The non shed coats are called wool, fleece and curly fleece.  The low shed coats are called hair.   Hair coats
can be straight or wavy.  Sometimes the true coat is not discovered until the puppy is mature.

We have had excellent results with our cockapoos as being hypoallergenic even if they have a wavy hair coat.  Our family is full of allergy sufferers
(both nasal and skin allergies), so we have a lot of experience in this area.  Our biggest problem is the dust and pollen that a full coated cockapoo
can carry into the house with them.  This is why we keep our cockapoos clipped short or shaved most of the time.  The are not as cute to me like
this, but my husband actually prefers the closely shaven look.  Either way, a cockapoo is a wonderfu pet because of his loyal temperament and
trainablilty first and formost!
